How to Use the Sports Breath in Your Everyday Life
Written and presented by:
The Sports Breath is a great trick to use in your everyday life. I taught this version to students and teachers as they returned to school after 9/11 in New York.
This breathing technique will help relieve tension, whatever its cause. Once you have mastered it, you can use it to develop resilience for the rest of your life.
Here’s how to do it.
Find a comfortable spot either standing or sitting. Loosen your arms and legs. Breathe in deeply through your chest into your nose: 1-2-3-4-5. Hold tightly for a slow count of 5, then breathe out slowly through your mouth for another count of 5. The hold is what makes it work. Repeat twice. If you can, extend the hold to a count of 10.
Another trick is to tighten your fists and arms as you breathe in and then release them slowly with your breathing out. You can also tighten your lower body. All these actions will bring relief from tension and anxiety.
