Our CoeurAge
If you were to check Amazon for Leadership titles, you would find over 70,000 books. When you’ve finished reading those, there are over 13,000 books on “change management.” While many of these books have valuable insights, the x number of irrefutable laws of leadership and y number of steps to manage change begin to sound similar, or at least can become banal quickly. Our CoeurAge is a different book. This book of essays is an “off-centre” approach, using stories to illuminate and meet the challenges of life in organizations by drawing on the personal courage of those within them. Why courage? Aristotle suggested courage is the first virtue, the one that makes all the others happen. To create new paths to sustained success as a leader, to resolve conflict and collaborate within teams, to inspire followers, and to follow etc. – all require courage at some point. We need smart people, but smart people with character are what we need for long-term success. Courage creates character. It is the virtue that enables the “hard” skills we all value so much.
The essays are organized by the five elements of courage – Awakening to the realities; resisting the compartmentalization of your Being to stay authentic; listening to those moments-of-truth that present your true Calling; taking the “leap of faith” by Doing what you are meant to do; and Enduring through the personal doubt and gargoyles at the gate who are saying (sometimes in the most kindest way), you are crazy. They were mostly inspired by the travels of a pilgrim. Travel is a powerful way to make sense of your world, and your place in it. Travel also puts you physically and viscerally in a different place, and that offers a different perspective that would otherwise be difficult to see. There is little that is banal about travel with purpose. The pages within are designed to provoke thought, and promote the kind of critical thinking that is perhaps not so obvious in other books that apparently have all the answers.
